As your hot tub ages there are items that must be maintained or replaced so you can continue to enjoy your hot tub for many years. After a period of 2 to 3 years it is often recommended to replace entire hot tub pumps, not just the motor as you will experience fewer problems.
Hot tub pumps are generally built with two main components which are the the dry end where the electric motor resides and turns the impeller and a wet end where the water is moved from and houses the impeller. Hot tub pumps have motors that are generally equipped with a 115 or 230 volt motor and plumbing pipes that measure one half to two inches (with a few that measure two and one half). These parts can individually be replaced but as a general rule it is much easier and better to replace the entire hot tub pump.
It is recommended that any repairs be done by a qualified electrcian as electrical repairs are dangerous and can should not be performed by un-licensed individuals.

Spa pumps can range in price from $175 to over $500 depending on the type and model required.
Horsepower can range from 3/4 h.p to over 7 h.p. and as a guide it is recommended that for every 4 to 6 jets you will need 1 h.p

1. A whining noise can indicate that the pumps bearings are failing.
2. Hot tub pumps have seals that fail and if you see leaking water or puddles under the pump it is very probable that the seals have failed.

When choosing a hot tub pump replacement you will need to determine:
1. Choose the correct spa pump horsepower and voltage. Check your owners manual or look at the old pumps labels.
2. Determine if pump is a center or side discharge unit.
3. Choose correct hot tub pump frame. Check you old pump ID plate for size which will generally be a 48 or a 52 frame.

4. Determine the correct plumbing size for the pump. Be careful as the wrong size is often ordered. You can determine the size by measuring the outside diameter after the pumps threads.
a.) For a 1.5 inch the outside would measure 2 3/8″
b.) For a 2.0 inch the outside would measure 3.0″
c.) For a 2.5 inch the outside would measure 3 5/8″
If you do your research you will find that finding replacement hot tub pumps are much easier than you would think. It is always a big help if you check your owners manual and the markings on the old hot tub pump.
