Welcome to my website about hot tub filters.  It is  important to maintain your hot tub and one  item to watch is the hot tub filter as your spa is only as clean as your filter.

Always read the manufactures recommended care instructions but in general hot tub filters do not have a defined replacement schedule or lifetime as the factors that determine when it needs to be cleaned or replaced depend on amount of use and the culprits that tend to clog the hot tub filters.  Some items that tend to block the filter are body oils and soap, algae, minerals, other organic material, and fine particles. It may also be noted that the quality of filter used also is a factor.

When to replace hot tub filters.

1.  When there is a tear in the filter or the core center collapses.
2.  Time between cleanings of the hot tub filter is more often.
3.  A low water flow rate and high back pressure.

When and how to clean hot tub filters.

A good indicator of when to clean a water filter is when there is a noticable decrease in water flow and an increase in back pressure of  approximately 8 psi above what the normal spa filter pressure (as stated in owners manual) should be.

As the oils, soap, algae, and other material clog the pores of the filter they must be removed as soon as possible before it becomes too difficult to remove as these items are not always easily removed with a hose rinse.

1.  Start with rinsing the hot tub filters with a hose making sure to clean all fine particles between the pleats until you no longer can see any debris.
2.  To remove any body oils, body suntan lotions, or other non particle material, is is recommended to use a commercial filter cleaner while soaking for a minimum of an hour and preferably overnight.
3.  If the hot tub filter has algae or a mineral buildup such as iron you can soak the filter in a solution of one part muriatic acid to twenty parts water until any bubbling action stops.
4.  Do a final cleanse of filter with a water hose before any reassemble of housing.

How to measure for replacement hot tub filters is helpful when choosing a replacement.  Some items to measure are:

1.  Measure the outside diameter of the hot tub filter to within one-thirty second of an inch.
2.  Measure the length of spa filter only, do not measure any fitting that may be on the bottom.
3.  If there is an opening in the top of the spa filter measure that diameter in inches.
4.  If there is an opening in the bottom of the filter also measure diameter.
5.  Note thread type of filter.  There are two types a finer thread known as standard or a larger square type of thread known as SEA.

If hot tub filters are maintained you will enjoy a clean tub and will avoid any problems with the pump and jets as a result.  It is much less expensive to maintain a system than a more costly hot tub replacement.
